Beer Cocktail: Lady Mad Marmalade
“more citrus-y than Centennial hops, more spicy and herbal than Chinook”
If you love a solid American IPA, this is a truly refreshing, health-boosting take on the style.
Starting with a base of Muskoka Mad Tom IPA – a popular enough brand that nearly anyone should be able to get their hands on it – I looked around for other ingredients that mimicked some of the key characteristics of the beer.
Aperol is a bitter, Italian liqueur infused with herbs and roots. Combined with navel orange and ruby grapefruit, the flavours work together to create something more citrus-y than Centennial hops, more spicy and herbal than Chinook. The result is still bitter, but distinctly thirst-quenching.
Visually, the pulp leaves the drink with a marmalade-like appearance. Because it’s built around Mad Tom IPA I’ve called it Lady Mad Marmalade (pronounced MAHR-muh-lad, like the song).
Lady Mad Marmalade Ingredients:
- 1 bottle of Muskoka Mad Tom IPA (LCBO #239749)
- 1.5 oz. Aperol (LCBO #176834)
- 1 Navel Orange
- 1 Ruby Grapefruit
- fresh rosemary (optional)
Make It:
- Cut open grapefruit and orange, then squeeze the hell out of them (get the pulp in there – those vesicles are an excellent source of fiber)
- In a pitcher, add the juice to the Mad Tom IPA and the Aperol. Stir.
- (Optional): I added some fresh cut rosemary for a bit of added herbal bitterness
