Better Bitters Brewing (a.k.a Nickel Brook) joins Python’s Pit
“We’ve started shipping beer out of province, we’re the first beer made gluten-free in Ontario, we’re the second beer organically brewed in Canada,” says Romano, 47, who can be seen answering phones, serving customers, speaking to a reporter, all the while talking up his Nickel Brook Brewery.
He’s been in the beer-making business – wine-making too – for the past two decades – and it’s obvious he’s consumed by it.
The Burlington craft brewer is a hard worker, but he has to be in the ultra-competitive beer business where multi-national giants like Molson and Labatt control the vast share of the Canadian market.
After slugging away for years, Romano says his revenues now approach about $2 million annually at the 30-employee business and that only in the last year has it become profitable.
