LCBO workers to vote on strike in April

Toronto – The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), which represents 8,100 LCBO workers, has announced a strike vote will be held April 24-25, 2017 in protest of the liberalization of beer, cider and wine sales in grocery stores.

OPSEU says the LCBO is demanding “concessions” that it will not accept, and says major concerns include job security, scheduling and health and safety, according to the Canadian Press. If discussions fail, a strike could follow.

In April 2013, an LCBO strike motion over wage issues saw workers vote 95% in favour of striking if contract talks failed. That strike was averted in May 2013 after an agreement was reached.

130 grocery stores now sell beer and cider in Ontario, which will eventually rise to 450.
