Ontario allowing convenience stores to sell alcohol would provide a much-needed convenience aspect to the purchase of alcohol in many places, as its does in most major jurisdictions in North America.
Unfortunately, the province, following an outdated, prohibition-era system, believes in giving LCBO full control over alcohol sales. Furthermore, the province thinks that amending the Beer Store’s retailing rights outside its current ownership would likely result in messy and expensive litigation.

After tobacco, alcohol is responsible for more death and disease in Canada than any other health risk factor. It contributes to dozens of illnesses and accidental deaths. Convenience store alcohol sales will increase the threat to public safety and community well-being.
For one, Ontario studies comparing alcohol-related profits to the costs of alcohol-related harm put us in the red: alcohol earned us $1.6 billion last year, but cost us $5 billion in health care, law enforcement, corrections and lost productivity.
