Malt house planned to open in Belleville

malthouseBellville, ON – A new malt house – Barn Owl Malt – is planned to be in production in Belleville summer 2014, according to the Belleville Intelligencer. Zoning approval was passed Monday.

Founders Devin Huffman’s and Leslie Rosebrugh plan to build a new facility on their existing property, located near the former Township of Thurlow at 224 Zion Rd.

Equipment for the malt house, including steep tanks, kiln, and germination beds, will be manufactured locally. The full malting process – steeping, germinating, and kilning, will be performed on site. Barley would initially be sourced from Western Canada, followed by locally harvested barley.

“Through ‘small-batch processing’ of one tonne, Huffman and Rosebrugh will have the ability to provide their customers with ‘made-to-order’ malted grains, such as roasted and smoked malts, designed to meet requirements from individual brewers,” writes the Belleville Intelligencer.

Long-term production targets are estimated to grow to up to seven tonnes per week.

Huffman and Rosebrugh hope to have Barn Owl Malt open mid-to-late summer 2014.
