OCB reports inaugural brewer’s conference success

The Ontario Craft Brewers are celebrating the success of their first Ontario Craft Brewers Conference & Centre of Excellence Awards, which hosted more than 200 attendees from the craft brewing industry and community on Friday, October 19, 2012.  Tickets were in such demand a last minuet venue change was required.
“We are extremely pleased with the success of our first conference and awards,” says Gary McMullen, president of Muskoka Brewery and chair of Ontario Craft Brewers. “We had high quality presentations, a full marketplace and a great awards show. And, we sold twice as many tickets as we had planned.”

Seven guest speakers gave presentations, including:

  • Sebastian Delgado, General Manager & VP Sales, Krones: Packaging Technology for the Craft Brewing Industry
  • Ken Belau, Former Head Brewer, Bell’s BreweryMaking a Berliner Weisse Style Beer (includes guided tasting of a test batch produced by Ken Belau & Jon Downing, Niagara College)
  • Kevin Jones, President and CEO, Bloom Centre for SustainabilityIntegrating Sustainability into Business Strategy and Operations to Build Long-Term Success for the Craft Brewing Industry
  • Robert RubensteinPresident, Target Marketing Research: State of the Industry Report

 

As previously reported, the Centre of Excellence Awards followed in the evening hosted by Nicholas Pashley (Notes on a Beermat, Cheers!), where the winners from 65 nominations in 8 categories were announced:

  • Product Quality/Process Innovation: Wellington Brewery
  • Marketing Innovation: Beau’s All Natural Brewing Co.
  • Education Leadership: Niagara College Teaching Brewery
  • Food & Beer Matching Development: Mirella Amato, Beerology
  • Sustainability Accomplishments: Beau’s All Natural Brewing Co.
  • Community Building: National Capital Craft Beer Week
