Ontarians would pay more with corner store liquor sales claims survey

brewers-association1A market survey carried out by Ipos Reid, Canada’s largest market and opinion research firm, says Ontarians could expect significant price increases if alternative liquor retail models, such as corner store sales, were adopted.

The study was sponsored by Canada’s National Brewers, the national trade association representing Labatt Brewing, Molson Coors Canada and Sleeman Breweries.

When comparing hundreds of prices on 14 individual brands of beer in different package formats across Alberta, BC, and Quebec to the average prices at The Beer Store, the study claims BC beer prices were 45% – 51% higher and Alberta prices were 30% – 36% higher than Ontario’s.

When Quebec prices are normalized to the higher Ontario tax rate, the Ipsos study found that Quebec prices were 11% – 38% more expensive than Ontario.

An opinion survey also conducted by Ipos Reid says that 81% of Ontarians are satisfied (37% very/44% somewhat) with the current retailing system, while only 19% were dissatisfied. Participants of the survey were made up of 801 Ontarian’s from Ipos Reid’s Canadian online panel.
