Petition calls to stop LCBO-Beer Store ‘sweetheart’ deal

Toronto, ON – Restaurants Canada, who this week requested Canada’s Competition Bureau to investigate a non-compete deal between the LCBO and the Beer Store, has now launched an online petition – #CanTheDeal.

“Restaurant and bar owners in Ontario pay ridiculously high prices for a case of beer. For some brands the price is 30 to 50 per cent higher than what consumers pay,” says James Rilett, Ontario Vice President for Restaurants Canada. “It’s time for Premier Wynne to can this deal and bring competition, fair pricing, and choice to the table.”

The petition makes the following claims, according to Restaurants Canada:

  • Ontario liquor stores (the LCBO) can only sell beer in packs of six or less
  • This gives foreign-owned The Beer Store a monopoly on 12 and 24 pack cases
  • This deal means that the Beer Store can charge whatever price it wants for the larger cases and not have to worry about competitors
  • This forces consumers and small businesses who buy beer at the LCBO to pay more per bottle and have less accessibility to beer and less choice on where to spend their money
