Pint o’ pumpkin proclaims fall

There’s an unsettlingly crisp breeze coming through the windows at night, and I’m starting to see passersby on the street wearing a disproportionate amount of flannel and tweed. Worse yet, I’ve been seeing packages of Halloween candy on shelves for weeks. It can only mean that fall is upon us. Flavours tend to become more complex and there’s something in us that hungers for autumn, at least if the progressively earlier annual release of everything pumpkin spiced is to be believed.

Pumpkin beers are almost always a difficult conversation and it’s for a very simple reason. They emulate pumpkin pie and everybody grew up with a different one. We all remember being 6 or 7 years old and going to Thanksgiving dinner; the highlight, aside from watching dad mangle the turkey with an electric carving knife, was the pie.
