Union Jack Brewing prepares for 2014 launch in Sault Ste. Marie
Sault Ste. Marie, ON is in store for a new craft brewery, Union Jack Brewing Co. – named for its founders, Jeff Jack and Jordan Jack – set to launch in 2014.
In July of this year, a portion of Sault Ste. Marie’s brewing history was lost with the demolition of former Norther Breweries site, which operated in the Northern Ontario city from 1907 to 2006. In February, arson was found to be the cause behind a fire that set the defunt brewery ablaze.
Union Jack Brewing, as reported by SooToday, are poised to open their microbrewery on Queen St. East, adjacent to a coffee shop. They will focus initially on a single flagship product available in 473mL cans and draught, with plans to expand throughout Ontario including the LCBO and The Beer Store.
Included in Union Jack’s product testing was Banana Cream Ale. The brewery utilized a local economic development conference, Naturallia, in October to involve locals in beer development feedback.
“We expected to narrow it down at Naturallia, but the feedback on all of our prototypes was extremely positive,” says Jack Jordan to SooToday. “One of the conference organizers even told me that the banana cream ale was the best beer she’s ever tasted.”
“We’re hoping to use Sault Ste. Marie as a sort of beer incubator,” said Jeff. “We feel that what works here should be transferable to the rest of the province. Although we do not intend to open a bar on site, we will encourage the public to come down and try my latest creations.”
