The 3rd annual Toronto Beer Week is here

TORONTO, ON – September 10th, 2012 – Some think that September marks the end of the prime beer-drinking season, but they couldn’t be more wrong!  Sure the nights get colder and the smell of backyard BBQ doesn’t fill the air on a nightly basis but pub season is just getting warmed up.  On September 14th the 3rd annual Toronto Beer Week is going green to kick things off with a pedal, a pop and a sip at the Summerhill LCBO (10 Scrivener Square) at 11am.

This year, Toronto Beer Week created a vintage bottle of hand-crafted beer that will be displayed at every participating bar.  Local craft beer champion and storied publican, George Milbrandt, owner of C’est What, and the folks at Great Lakes Brewing, Toronto’s oldest craft brewery, were enlisted to collaborate on this very special beer – a Metric Porter.

“It’s a very complex and rich porter with a nice balance between the bittersweet and roasted malt flavours,” says George. “Our inspiration was the beers that helped keep the Upper Canada Loyalists ‘hydrated’ during the war of 1812.”

“We also had a little fun with the name.  Most people would call this style an Imperial Porter but we decided to give it a definite Canadian spin and call it a Metric Porter.”

Bottles of Metric Porter will be sent out by modern pony express – bike couriers.  Couriers will crisscross the city delivering their precious cargo to fine Toronto Beer Week bars marking the official start to Toronto Beer Week 2012.

Toronto Beer Week is about challenging Torontonians to go out and explore awesome beers they’ve never had before. With over 50 bars and restaurants, 25 breweries, 2 importers and only 9 days to squeeze it all in you have your work cut out for you.

“We’ve come a long way in the last 3 years,” says Chris Goddard, Toronto Beer Week’s Executive Director.  “There is something really exciting happening in the beer and food industry right now; people are rediscovering the true craft of making all natural beers.”

During the 9 day ‘week’ you can rub elbows with beer judges at the Home Brew Competition, learn how to pair beer with cheese, discover new watering holes on one of the pub crawls, enjoy entire meals created using beer as an ingredient or just share a pint of your favourite craft beer with some good friends.

Toronto Beer Week 2012 will wrap up with the 10th Annual Golden Tap Awards, presented by Ontario’s premier beer resource, The Bar Towel on September 22nd at beerbistro. Online voting is open to the public with awards ranging from Favourite Cask Conditioned Ale to Favourite Craft Beer Bar and the prestigious Craft Brewery of the Year Award.
