University of Guelph to acquire and preserve historic Sleeman CollectionTweet
Although purchased in 2006 by Japan’s Sapporo Breweries Ltd., Sleeman Breweries has a rich history in Ontario establishing their first brewery, Stamford Springs Brewery, in St. Catherines, ON in 1836.
The University of Guelph today announced that they have acquired the Sleeman Collection for archival at the McLaughlin Library.
The collection includes photographs, business records, newspapers, correspondence and other materials illustrating Sleeman’s impact on Canada throughout the last 150 years.
The press release quoted John W. Sleeman, company founder and chairman and great-great-grandson of the original brewmaster, John H. Sleeman saying, “For many years, we have been accumulating my family’s historical artifacts.”
“I have always hoped that we could somehow preserve them for the future but also make them available for the public to see and enjoy. I’m delighted to say that, with the University of Guelph’s wonderful archival facilities, this has now been made possible.”
The University of Guelph will unveil the collection at an event held Wednesday, April 3 from 2:30-3:30pm in UoG’s Academic Town Square.
John W. Sleeman and Ian Bowering, beer historian and author, will be among the speakers.
