Vote for Canada’s favourite beer in Beer Madness
Toronto, ON – Beer expert Crystal Luxmore, in conjunction with Canoe Sun Media, has launched Beer Madness: Canada’s favourite beer contest.
“We’ve divided up 32 beloved brews into four divisions. The beers are seeded, just like in March Madness, with the top seeds being the beers most Canadians know, and the lower seeds being cult favourites. In each round, the top seed will face the lowest remaining seed—with you voting on which beer should win.”
Bracket 1 voting is now open.
“First, the beer must be available at stores or bars in at least three provinces or territories. Controversially, this disqualifies local superstars, like Cereal Killer from Halifax’s Big Spruce Brewing, and Witchshark from Toronto’s Bellwoods Brewery. But while these brews might be the province’s #1, they can’t be the country’s favourite if most Canadians can’t get their hands on a pint,” writes Luxmore.
Adds Luxmore, “Second, the beer must be brewed in Canada—because it just feels wrong that Canada’s favourite could be a foreign import.”
“This doesn’t exclude beers that are made here but are not 100% Canadian-owned, such as Labatt Blue, Molson Canadian or Sleeman’s, which are all controlled by foreign brewing conglomerates. This might rile craft beer fanatics, but keep in mind that while craft sales are skyrocketing, over 80% of Canadian beer drinkers quaff the big brands. Instead, the rule is: As long as the recipe originated on Canadian soil, and is brewed here at home, it’s good to go.”
