Whitby nanobrewery 5 Paddles set to open in June

5paddles-logoAn off-shoot project from five Durham homebrewers comes to fruition this June when 5 Paddles Brewing Co. launches with three brands on Tuesday, June 11.

The nanobrewery, located in Whitby, ON, will utilize a 3 hectolitre (300l) brewing system.

5paddles-buildingWhere does the brewery’s name originate from? “After bantering about potential brewery names for a few weeks, we came up with the name based on all of us having a hand, or mash paddle for that matter, in the brewing process”, says 5 Paddles.

Three products will be available at their 11am launch this Tuesday – Dog Days Of Summer Ale, a 6% ABV, 30 IBU ale showcasing the Summer Saaz hop from New Zealand; Badass Pale Ale, a hoppy, citrus-forward ale measuring at 6.3% ABV and 35 IBUs; and Midnight Paddler, a Black IPA/Imperial Stout hybrid clocking in at 9.9% ABV.

“Too many breweries open with a majority of money invested in one beer that has never been sold or tested by the public”, says brewer Spencer McCormack. “We don’t want to be that brewery.”

McCormack adds, “In our first few months we want to brew as many beers as we can. We have a collection of recipes that we’ve tinkered with and are confident will make great beers.”

All three beers will be sold in 650 mL bottles. An IPA and ESB will also be available during their launch week.
