Wolfe Island’s Canada 150 ale brewed with real cannonball
Wolfe Island – Wolfe Island Spring Craft Brewery announced today its newly launched Wolfenstein Cannonball Ale is brewed using an authentic 36lb solid iron cannonball found on the bottom of Lake Ontario, from the War of 1812. It is brewed in the German steinbier style.
“We heat the cannonball significantly hotter than the German brewers would have heated their stones,” says brewmaster René Ziegelmaier. “This heat caramelizes sugars from the malt to help balance bitterness from the hops, as well the cannonball leaves residual iron in the beer, giving the beer its crisp and refreshing finish.”
Co-founder Casey Fisher adds, “Sitting on Wolfe Island, how could we not honour the history. Because of where it is in relation to Kingston and Fort Henry, the land was used as a strategic military point between the United States and Canada. It was also used historically as a strategic place for smuggling alcohol during the prohibition era.”
The newly opened brewery in the 1000 Islands, part of Wolfe Island Grill, features an additional line of historically-themed beers including Billy Bishop Red Ale, Lighthouse Lager, and Orange White. Wolfenstein Cannonball Ale will also stay on as a permanent beer.
It is available now on draught at the Wolfe Island Grill.
