Two new breweries in planning phase in Uxbridge

uxbridgeUxbridge, ON – Two new craft breweries could begin brewing this year in Uxbridge – The Second Wedge Brewing Co. and Barn Door Beverage Co.

The former, undertaken by husband and wife team, Joanne Richter and Rob Garrard, have their eyes set on a former Sears building in downtown Uxbridge for The Second Wedge Brewing Co., as reported by DurhamRegion.com.

Their name, “Second Wedge”, honours the four wedged hills of the Oak Ridges Moraine, according to DurhamRegion.com.

The couple hopes to be brewing by the end of 2014 or beginning of 2015. The brewery would would also host its own retail space and tasting room, along with draught sales and eventually, LCBO distribution. Although they won’t divulge their brewmaster’s identitiy, his CV includes both Mill St. Brewery and Upper Canada Brewery.

The latter, Barn Door Beverage Co. is being spearheaded by Robert Lee, owner of King Brewery in Nobleton, ON who is an Uxbridge resident. Lee plans to open a $15 million brewery with adjacent restaurant in a vacant Canadian Tire, which would also host a distillery and cidery, and retail store, indicates DurhamRegion.com.

Barn Door Beverage Co. would also take produce King Brewery’s Pilsner and Dark brands on site.

“We know, of course, that there is another brewery in planning at the Canadian Tire end of town but while one brewery is maybe enough to draw people into town, two breweries we feel is a real reason and makes it a real destination and becomes an opportunity for a day trip,” expresses Richter to DurhamRegion.com.

“Two breweries is a great thing. It draws that many more people up to town”, she adds.

The Township of Uxbridge is home to over 20,500 residents.
